Text reading How I Dye My Hair

Hello people of the internet! Let's get real here. The number one thing I'm asked whenever I go anywhere is: "How do you dye your hair?!". I get asked by family, friends, other bloggers, and even strangers. I've been meaning to do this post pretty much since I start blogging. I just want to tell you guys a few things first. I am not a professional. What works for me might not work for you. Always ask a professional for help where and when you can.

So, I've had dyed hair since I was 8-9. It started off as highlights and then went to semi-permanent dyes when I was 10. Then the summer I turned 12 my mom bleached my hair for the first time. Basically, I haven't had my natural hair color since then... Oops. So I definitely have a bit of experience in the the hair dying area.

Today I'm going to walk you through the process of dying you hair with a semi permanent dye. I personally swear by the brand La Riche Directions. I have always had a good experience with it. Always remember that when trying to dye your hair a bright blue, pink, purple, whatever you need to start with blonde hair. If you aren't lucky enough to have that you'll need to bleach it. I would recommend getting your hair bleached in a salon though. Especially if you aren't used to dying your hair. Bleaching is a whole other can of worms!

First thing you want to do is wash your hair with just shampoo. I let my hair air dry for a little bit. I prefer working with damp hair (not dripping wet)! While you wait for your hair to dry a little, we need to make our mixture.

Hask Monoi oil conditioner, La Rice Directions in Dark Tulip, container, and stick.

I used the color Dark Tulip and some conditioner. I'm not a fan of how dark this dye is. So I decided to dilute it instead of just applying it straight out of the tub. I use about 1 teaspoon of hair dye for every 5 tablespoons of conditioner. Then I would mix it together in a container. As you can see... I use that container a lot.

After I mixed it all together the dye is much lighter! I kept using those measurements until I had enough product to do all of my hair. This will vary from person to person! Before I start dying my hair I split it into small even sections. It usually takes me about 45-60 minutes for me to cover all of my hair. Once I've made sure all of my hair is completely covered I put my hair in a shower cap.

The key to the longevity and brightness of the color is in this step. Since La Riche Directions dye is basically a staining conditioner I leave it in for between 3-4 hours. It's safe. Trust me on that one. I have healthy hair and I do this every couple of weeks. When I do wash it out (be careful it stains everything) I don't use any shampoo or conditioner. I just rinse it until the water runs clear.

Now you all know my secret. Feel free to ask any questions you might have below. I would be more than happy to help you out! Also if you try this out make sure to tell/show me on Twitter!
